Three figures are bathing in the river. The horizon is unlimited, the sun is rising, and the waters of the Ganges are peaceful. This ritual has been performed for millenniums in India, as the Ganges waters which have antiseptic properties are said to be purifying for the soul. In a colorful landscape of warm tones from the sun, the river is reflecting the sky. This painting has been created in a contemporary impressionist style on a fine museum quality canvas.

Improving your painting technique by copying old masters at the museum.
There are many ways to improve one's technique and one of the most effective way is to make copies at the museum. The first time I saw this phenomena was at the Louvre itself with many artists. At the time  I was a beginning artist myself and admired the students replicating old masters techniques. The most striking artist I met there at the Louvre was not a student. He was 80 years old and he was painting his 117s Mona Lisa! The one he was reproducing was for the Japan embassy in Paris. I spent several days watching him paint and asking him many questions and taking notes on his technique.  As I mentioned he was 80 years old and he was complaining about his doctor who forbade him to drink coffee and smoke cigars_his only little pleasures...
He painted fast with a medium size round kolinsky type brush, something which shocked me since I rarely used rounds myself at the time and he looked like he was painting with a child's brush. The result, however was striking and just great. He showed me his portfolio later on and he was so much into Leonardo Da Vinci that he painted himself as the master, a look alike portrait of himself as Leonardo painted himself.
However, I came out of this experience determined to go to a museum and paint on location. At the time I lived in Los angles and therefore I applied for a permit at the L.A. county museum and painted a couple pieces, there a Bourguereau and a Rubens.
Here they are:
                                                                    My first one:

Copy of William Bourguereau: Innocence 2
executed at the L.A. County Museum
My second one:
Copy of Peter Paul Rubens: The Holy Family with St. Elizabeth, St. John, and a Dove
executed at the L.A. County Museum
When I was copying the Rubens I attracted quite a crowd of admirers to the point where it was difficult to work or even breath depending on the time of the day.
When I was doing the under painting in Sepia tones and whites, a british man started to talk to me. It appeared that he was one of the curators at the National Gallery of london and had quite a knowledge of the techniques of the old masters. He let me know that Rubens did not use an underpainting, but mostly painted colors directly with his particular own style. That lead me to research his technique with intensity. I'll now show you an unfinished Rubens painting:
As you can see this is not a finished product. Look at the leg of the roman soldier on the right.
And the one with his back to us. You can see the sketch outlined in brown and a bit of shadows and white light. I would not really call this an underpainting, but more like the putting down of the sketch, because in order for an underpainting to be effective it needs to be way more finished than this. Now notice how the flesh tones are added, practically muscle by muscle:
When I did my copy, I did not know about this, but that was fortunate, since Van Dick himself, one of the best pupil of Rubens, could not imitate this technique.
However, I studied this painting carefully and copied it several times. So doing, I learned so much about technique, anatomy, color, modeling.
A few years later, when I lived in Arlington for a few months for my husband's business, I had the opportunity to make a copy at the National Gallery of Art of Washington D.C.
Here is the painting I copied there:
                                                                    My third one:
Copy of Boucher at the National Gallery of Art of Washington D.C, "The love letter".
For this copy I was only allowed 3 afternoons. I already had 3 young children and hired a baby sitter in the middle of my very busy schedule. It therefore was a  race with time. But again I learned so much  with this piece, especially about contrast, (My work was never contrasted enough) and about the balance between dark and light, and as you can see here the top and most sides of the picture are in darkness allowing brilliant light to shine and focus on the figures.
I did paint more copies of old masters over the years but from prints, which does not have the same impact. to copy paintings at the museum is fun, challenging and very rewarding for the art student.

Time for a nap!
it's summer and it's sunny. What could be better than taking a snooze in a serene environment. After a good siesta, some time off, one can feel totally zen. On vacation if undisturbed and satisfied one gets a good rest and becomes happy. The freedom experienced in nature, with calm, a comfortable tree, that is leisure. One can feel peaceful like this man who managed to take a nap in a tree and is at peace.

Portrait of the famous Mahatma Gandhi: to the masses of India, he was the Mahatma, or "saintly one," and was revered as a prophet. Gandhi urged his followers to combat British rule, not with violence but with passive resistance, also called non-cooperation or civil disobedience.

This painting depicts a flower market in India, where the merchants are getting set up and there is flowers everywhere. Some have stands, some do not and just set up on the concrete floor. In this piece I purposefully painted in a soft impressionist style. Note that I never just take a photo and paint. This is a complete creation, with several preparatory sketches. It is painted in oils on canvas.

The Panihati Festival, oil on canvas, classical realism, spiritual art, by Dominique Amendola
This painting is a large piece and is under strict copyright to Dominique Amendola and may not be reproduced in any form.
In this picture, there is a reunion of many sadhus (sages) at the occasion of an invitation of Raghunatha Das who was asked by Lord Nityananda to put up a festival and feed many saints. He suggested that he organize this festival and with his wealth feed thousands of vaishnavas. They gathered by the banks of the Ganges and were served flat rice with yogurt and bananas. In this painting, Lord Caitanya is not visible to all. He appears to lord Nityananda and they playfully feed each other, while the others might not be aware of His presence. Some of them simply see Nityananda sitting by Himself. This is a commissioned painting and I realize that the subject is a bit complicated for some. However, I wanted to make this painting available to a small group of followers. The style of this art work is very classical.

Latest progress on "The Panihati festival" painting
Well, here we are again. I worked on the figures mainly these past weeks. I had to put a lot of hours in other projects, one being my website, but I am working on this large piece relentlessly. My main focus, this time, was to achieve a bright effulgence in the figure of Lord Chaitanya which would communicate itself to Nityananda ( in blue), while the opening figures, even so in front would be more like a dark doorway framing the two Lords.
Full tableau of the Panihati festival in progress
Notice that actually the foliage in the back is not as yellow as this, but due to the photo and the large size of the piece, it was difficult to get an accurate image for the colors. I actually did not work at all on that foliage since the last post.
Opening figures with the two Lords
From this detail of the painting, you can see what I mean and how I have made sure Lord Chaitanya is actually the main figure there.
The story goes that He was actually not present, but He came and only appeared to some. Some of the figures seem not to notice what is going on, while others do. In particular, the opening figures are not aware of the presence of Lord Chaitanya.
Detail for one of the opening figures on left.
So many glazes have been necessary to achieve this image. Layer after layer, refinement after refinement. I always work wet in wet, with my home made medium as a wet base and the fast drying medium for my painting brush.
I have added some details also, such as banana leaf plates and strips for the dhotis.
Detail for the opening figure on right side
If you compare those two opening figures with their images on my last post you would be able to see the progress.
Now I will concentrate on details in the background, with trees, grass, a few flowers, mangos, etc...
Once gain, this post is to be continued....
