Portrait of the famous Mahatma Gandhi: to the masses of India, he was the Mahatma, or "saintly one," and was revered as a prophet. Gandhi urged his followers to combat British rule, not with violence but with passive resistance, also called non-cooperation or civil disobedience.

This painting depicts a flower market in India, where the merchants are getting set up and there is flowers everywhere. Some have stands, some do not and just set up on the concrete floor. In this piece I purposefully painted in a soft impressionist style. Note that I never just take a photo and paint. This is a complete creation, with several preparatory sketches. It is painted in oils on canvas.

The Panihati Festival, oil on canvas, classical realism, spiritual art, by Dominique Amendola
This painting is a large piece and is under strict copyright to Dominique Amendola and may not be reproduced in any form.
In this picture, there is a reunion of many sadhus (sages) at the occasion of an invitation of Raghunatha Das who was asked by Lord Nityananda to put up a festival and feed many saints. He suggested that he organize this festival and with his wealth feed thousands of vaishnavas. They gathered by the banks of the Ganges and were served flat rice with yogurt and bananas. In this painting, Lord Caitanya is not visible to all. He appears to lord Nityananda and they playfully feed each other, while the others might not be aware of His presence. Some of them simply see Nityananda sitting by Himself. This is a commissioned painting and I realize that the subject is a bit complicated for some. However, I wanted to make this painting available to a small group of followers. The style of this art work is very classical.

Latest progress on "The Panihati festival" painting
Well, here we are again. I worked on the figures mainly these past weeks. I had to put a lot of hours in other projects, one being my website, but I am working on this large piece relentlessly. My main focus, this time, was to achieve a bright effulgence in the figure of Lord Chaitanya which would communicate itself to Nityananda ( in blue), while the opening figures, even so in front would be more like a dark doorway framing the two Lords.
Full tableau of the Panihati festival in progress
Notice that actually the foliage in the back is not as yellow as this, but due to the photo and the large size of the piece, it was difficult to get an accurate image for the colors. I actually did not work at all on that foliage since the last post.
Opening figures with the two Lords
From this detail of the painting, you can see what I mean and how I have made sure Lord Chaitanya is actually the main figure there.
The story goes that He was actually not present, but He came and only appeared to some. Some of the figures seem not to notice what is going on, while others do. In particular, the opening figures are not aware of the presence of Lord Chaitanya.
Detail for one of the opening figures on left.
So many glazes have been necessary to achieve this image. Layer after layer, refinement after refinement. I always work wet in wet, with my home made medium as a wet base and the fast drying medium for my painting brush.
I have added some details also, such as banana leaf plates and strips for the dhotis.
Detail for the opening figure on right side
If you compare those two opening figures with their images on my last post you would be able to see the progress.
Now I will concentrate on details in the background, with trees, grass, a few flowers, mangos, etc...
Once gain, this post is to be continued....

Panihati festival in progress (part 2), oil painting by Dominique Amendola
This is a large canvas and I have made slow but steady progress for this painting. I just finished the first color coat on the whole canvas. I progressed with several layers of glazes using both my own medium and a commercial medium. The commercial medium is fast drying, while the other dries in several days and it allows me to put a layer of wet slow drying medium and apply colors in glazes with the other medium. This is a wet in wet technique.
Painting of the Panihati festival in progress
You can see details below in the figure holding a water pot.
I plan to bring this and other figures to finer and finer details and am going slowly with several coats of glazes. Perhaps you know that Titian told his pupils that for a painting to really vibrate you needed to apply 40 coats of glazing! Evidently, I am not planning that many glazes, but definitively 10 to 15 coats is what I have in mind.

After bringing the figures to a certain level of detail, I go back to painting the background landscape.
This is what it looked like before i added more details:
Detail of the background
My technique is simple. I glaze the background with raw umber and within this wet medium, I bring out the details. The result is this:
Detail of the background after bringing out some more details
Again, once this coat has dried for a few days I will glaze in modifications to round up the shape, blur some of the details and bring out other details.
To be continued....

The Panihati festival painting in progress by Dominique Amendola
I have been working on a new painting called the Panihati festival. In this picture, there is a reunion of many vaishnavas at the occasion of an invitation of Raghunatha Das who was inspired by Lord Nityananda. He suggested that he organize the festival and with his wealth feed thousands of vaishnavas. They gathered by the banks of the Ganges and were serve flat rice with yogurt. In this painting, Lord Caitanya is not visible to all. He appears to lord Nityananda and they playfully feed each other.
I started with an elaborate sketch. seen below:
After establishing the sketch and producing detailed sketches for each figures, I transferred the design to a large canvas.
I am in the process at this point of painting the underpainting in Verdaccio technique. Verdaccio is an Italian name for the mixture of black, white, and yellow pigments resulting in a grayish or yellowish (depending on the proportion) soft greenish brown.
Underpainting for "The Panihati Festival"
This is one of the opening figures in the composition
Those figures are going to be Lord Nityananda and Lord Chaitanaya.
As you can see, Lord Chaitanya on the right is made luminous to create the impression that He is not coming from this plane, but rather appearing only to some. Most of the others do not see him. All they see is lord Nityanda on the left, just sitting and eating.
Opening figure on the right with a person getting water in his lota.
The colors used for the underpainting are white, ocher yellow, terre verte also called terra verde and black. lots of layers have been applied at this point, going from dark to light.
The figures in the back may not be as clear as the ones in front and have a bit less contrast.
Now, I am ready to finish the background landscape and ad colors to my figures. I will use thin paints and lots of glazes.
For this purpose I have already created a color sketch for this painting on a small canvas.

Original oil on canvas 30"x 40"

This is a commissioned piece. The original is sold. Everything in this painting is original. The preparatory sketches took a month and the painting took 3 months to finish.

Pancha Tattva  in the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition refers specifically to the Five aspects of God or Absolute Truth. In Gaudiya Vaishnavism these five features of God are believed to have incarnated on earth as five people in the late 15th century, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu,Nityananda Prabhu, Advaita acarya, Gadadhara Pandit and Srivas Thakur. They famously spread the Hare krishna mantra, and the practice of devotion (bhakti) to Krishna throughout India.
