Upon seeing the demon Vristasura in the form of a gigantic bull, the gopis took shelter of the trees. In their terror, they rushed to the Tamalas trees, because of the bluish hues of their trunks, (they confuse them with Krishna.) ( From the Srimad Bhagavatam of the Puranas)
