Markandeya Rishi was deep in meditation on the Supreme Lord when Lord Shiva and Parvati happened to pass by. At Parvati’s request, Lord Shiva descended to offer the great sage a benediction. Although Lord Shiva knew that Markandeya, being self-realized, had no need for any boon, he approached the sage nonetheless, and they shared a profound philosophical exchange. This conversation is described in the Eleventh Canto of the Srimad Bhagavatam. This original oil painting is part of Dominique Amendola’s spiritual art collection, featuring a meditating rishi in a scene rendered in the style of classical realism.
