This classical oil painting on linen canvas captures the beloved pastime of Mother Yashoda and young Sri Krishna, as described in the Bhagavat Purana (Srimad Bhagavatam 10.9.10).
In this scene, mischievous Krishna stands atop an upside-down grinding mortar, stealing yogurt from a hanging pot and sharing it with a monkey. When Mother Yashoda approaches with a stick, Krishna, although the Supreme Lord whom great yogis cannot capture even through deep meditation, fearfully climbs down and flees.
Despite being hampered by her broad hips and loosened hair adorned with falling flowers, Mother Yashoda runs after Him with intense maternal affection and ultimately catches Krishna from behind.
This tender moment illustrates the divine sweetness of Krishna's loving relationship with His devotees and is painted in the timeless classical tradition."
