This painting illustrates a pivotal moment from the Srimad Bhagavatam in which young Krishna observes the cowherd men of Vrindavan preparing a ritual to appease Indra, the demigod of rain. With humility and curiosity, Krishna begins questioning his elders, including Nanda Maharaja, about the purpose of the ceremony. Though initially dismissed as too young to grasp the Vedic rituals, Krishna persuasively argues against worshipping demigods for material gain. He encourages the villagers to instead focus their devotion on the Supreme Lord and His devotees. This scene marks the beginning of the Govardhan Lila, where Krishna establishes the principle of bhakti—devotion free of material motives.
